How to split a PDF online

Splitting a PDF is the inverse of merging: take one document and break it into smaller files. The most common reasons people split are pulling a specific chapter, removing a confidential page, or breaking a 200-page scan into more manageable chunks for emailing.

Quick steps

  1. Drop your PDF onto the box above.
  2. Type the page numbers or ranges you want. Examples: 1-3, 5, 8, 10, 1-2, 4-6, 9.
  3. Click Split & Download. Single-range splits download as one PDF; multi-range splits come as a ZIP file.

Range syntax cheatsheet

  • 1-5 — pages 1 to 5 inclusive.
  • 3 — just page 3.
  • 1-3, 5 — two outputs: pages 1-3 and page 5.
  • Empty — keeps every page as one output (effectively just re-saves the PDF).

Frequently asked questions

How do I specify which pages to extract?
Use comma-separated ranges. 1-3 = pages 1, 2, 3. 5 = just page 5. 1, 3-5, 8 creates three separate PDFs.
Do I get one file or multiple?
If you specify a single range, you get one PDF. Multiple comma-separated ranges produce a ZIP of separate PDFs.
Is page order preserved?
Yes — within each output, pages keep the same order as in the source.
Are the splits uploaded to a server?
Never. Everything happens in your browser via pdf.js + pdf-lib.
